West Oakland has long been overlooked and burdened by industrial pollution, freeway expansion, disinvestment, leaving it with poor air quality, limited resources and a history of being treated as a dumping ground rather than a thriving community. Railway Roots re-imagines the old 16th Street Train Station, located in the heart of the neighborhood, as a community driven space where history, sustainability, and local culture intersect. Rooted in the bay area’s brewing heritage—especially the legacy of steam beer—this project transforms the site into a sustainable brewery and community hub that honors both the industrial past and a more sustainable future.
