Lived Experience Design Applications in Landscape Architecture: A Phenomenological Study
Location: Kiffa, Mauritania (Sahel Region)

Dilemma: In Mauritania’s vulnerable landscape, desert villages rapidly adopt industrial agriculture, distancing themselves from traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). These practices accelerate desertification, turning once-fertile land barren and threatening local livelihoods.

How can lived-experience (phenomenological) design aid in the reconnection of people to land and the transmission of TEK?

Project Vision: This project seeks to empower and restore the resilience of communities in Mauritania’s Sahel region through a phenomenological approach that honors local traditions, lived experiences, and deep connections to the land.
