Refuge by Design: Highlighting the importance of refuge spaces designed for community and adaptability
Location: Paradise, CA
The 2018 Camp Fire devastated Paradise, CA, highlighting critical gaps in evacuation infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and fire-adapted design. This project envisions a future where built environments actively prepare for and adapt to wildfire. At its core is the Butte County Legacy Center, a memorial and educational hub that honors those lost while teaching fire mitigation strategies. A fire-scape garden integrates learning into the landscape, while multi-use design ensures spaces serve both daily life and moments of crisis. The center also functions as a Temporary Refuge Area, providing emergency supplies and shelter when needed. Through integrated community, policy, and design strategies, this project aims to shape Paradise into a model for fire-adaptive living.
