Adaptive Access: Experience the Big Sur Cliffside On Foot
Location: Big Sur, CA
Highway 1, running through Big Sur, extends from Carmel to San Simeon and draws millions of tourists annually. However, this highway has been affected by several landslide events since its construction cutting off access to this coastline. Presently, Caltrans pours funds into the reconstruction of the damaged highway but it’s been proven that once a landslide affects an area, it’s more likely to affect that area again. This project aims to reimagine access to the coast by providing an alternate route for vehicles, allowing for a new experience for pedestrians with landscape design strategies that are implemented to mitigate for future landslide events.
