The unhoused population is a growing primary user of the public landscapes we design. In response to the visibility of houselessness, architecture has utilized design to dehumanize, deter, and disappear people experiencing houselessness. Cities' "out of sight, out of mind" response causes issues socially, environmentally, and economically.
Care in Public Space is a research project that started with the question, "Can landscape architecture play a meaningful role in the issue of houselessness in San Luis Obispo?"
